Cancer survivors, caregivers and supporters participated in the 33rd Komen Vermont MORE THAN PINK Walk in Manchester on Saturday. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation hosted similar events around the country over the weekend.Nicole Marohn, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's executive director for New England, said about $1.5 million was raised this year in New England. Vermont alone helped to contribute about $115,000 with about 10 local sponsors."One in 8 women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. So, there is a sense of urgency, though we've come so far. Komen has contributed about $1.1 billion in research since our inception, and we have really seen the risks of breast cancer reduce. However, there's still so much more to do," Marohn said. The money has been supporting institutions with breast cancer research as well as patient care offerings, which includes financial aid and patient navigation. Marohn added that about 12,000 Vermonters are utilizing those resources currently. Patty Lewis was one of the breast cancer survivors present at the event. Currently, Lewis is battling a rare form of stage 4 cancer in her appendix. "It takes a lot out of you," she said. Lewis was fighting one step at a time while her team supported her at the event. She's keeping her spirits up with a smile and holding onto hope. "I'm just not ready to give up," she said.
